Commenting on the increase in the package, Islamabad Police Inspector General Amir Zulfiqar Khan said that the initiative is aimed at boosting the morale of police personnel.

Punjab cops

The Punjab government has approved a move to almost double the compensation package and allowances for the families of police martyrs for officers in almost all ranks.

Apart from revising the package, the Punjab government has decided to extend the provision of the package to those cops who are killed in traffic accidents while on duty.

Documents available with The Express Tribune show that the shuhuda package has been divided into three categories.

The first category is for those officers killed while fighting terrorists. Heirs of such police officers, irrespective of whether they hold the rank of a constable or an inspector general, they will be given between Rs10 million to Rs20 million as compensation. Moreover, the family of the martyred cop will receive a fully furnished house worth up to Rs5 million, a residential plot measuring between seven Kanals and up to a Marla along with a monthly allowance between Rs20,000-Rs100,000.

Further, the heirs of the martyr holding a rank of DSP or above rank will be provided with a car between 1,000cc-1,300cc car or a sum equivalent to it. Their children will also receive free education and one of them will be recruited into the police department. Such officials will also be conferred with a Shujat Award.

The second category is limited for officials who embraced martyrdom while fighting criminal elements. Heirs of officers who fall fighting criminals will be provided with financial aid from Rs4 million to Rs10 million. Other facilities provided to martyred cops will remain the same as those provided to cops who fall while fighting terrorists. They will not be eligible for a civil award.

The third category includes police officers who were killed in traffic-related incidents, including accidents, in the line of duty.

In this category, heirs of traffic police constables or head constables will be given a house worth Rs3 million and a monthly allowance of Rs15,000. For officers in ranks from an ASI to SI, their heirs will receive a house worth Rs4 million and Rs26,000 in monthly allowance. Heirs of officers with ranks of inspector and up to DSP will get a house worth Rs4.5 million and Rs37,500 as monthly allowance.
