Former premier Nawaz Sharif’s personal physician Dr Adnan Malik came under attack late Monday night in London.

According to Express News, the physician was out for an evening walk in the British capital when he was attacked by two masked men with steel rods.

Confirming the attack, a family member said Dr Malik sustained injuries on his face and body and was shifted to a hospital. A complaint has been filed but the Metropolitan Police is yet to make an arrest.

However, the Scotland Yard said it is treating the attack as street crime and added that the men robbed Dr Malik of his watch.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) pegged the incident as an attempt to sabotage the three-time prime minister’s medical treatment.

The party’s president, Shehbaz Sharif, said the incident appeared to be well-thought-out and hoped the Met Police will apprehend the suspects. Shehbaz recalled that the Sharif families’ residences have previously also faced attacks.

Ahsan Iqbal also condemned the attack and prayed for Dr Malik's early recovery.

Punjab govt rejects Nawaz’s plea to stay abroad

The former premier's stay in the United Kingdom has become a bane of conflict between the incumbent government and the PML-N.

Nawaz, along with Shehbaz and Dr Malik, left Pakistan on November 20, 2019 - four days after the LHC directed the federal government to remove Nawaz's name from the ECL for four weeks. Previously, the IHC suspended his senetence in Al Azizia case so he could receive medical treatment abroad.

The PTI-led federal government also allowed him permission to fly abroad for treatment after a board of doctors constituted by the government concluded that his treatment was not possible in Pakistan.

After the completion of allowed stay abroad, Nawaz requested the Punjab government for an extention. However, the Usman Buzdar-led government rejected his request and directed him to surrender instead.

A three-page letter by the PTI government, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, said a provincial committee deliberated from February 19 to 21 and concluded that extention plea did not hold any merit. It added that there was no sufficient evidence that Nawaz received substantive medical treatment or was even admitted to the hospital for a day.

On the other hand, the PML-N maintains that Nawaz was diagnosed with an immune system disorder – acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). It claims that the former premier's doctors had to thrice postpone his surgery because of the absence of Maryam Nawaz.

It may be mentioned here that Maryam is currently on bail in Pakistan but has been denied permission to travel abroad. Her petition on the matter is being heard by the LHC.
