Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed optimism for the success of landmark US-Taliban deal, saying it will not only bring relief to the people of Afghanistan but also ensure peace in the tribal districts of Pakistan, which share border with the war-torn country.

He was addressing a public gathering in Mohmand on Monday during his day-long visit to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), where the premier also distributed Kifalat card among the deserving people under his government social safety ‘Ehsas Programme’.

“I pray for Afghanistan from the bottom of my heart and I hope that this peace deal succeeds as it will benefit Afghan people as well as bring peace in our tribal areas,” he said.

The landmark peace deal, signed on Feb 29 in Doha between US and Afghan Taliban lays out a timetable for full troop withdrawal from Afghanistan within 14 months. The agreement also states that both sides would free each other’s prisoners and hold the intra-Afghan dialogue due to begin on March 10.

The prime minister's remarks comes after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who initially refused to release the prisoners, has announced that the mechanism for the release of Taliban prisoners has been reached and a presidential decree would be issued in this regard on Tuesday.

Speaking about the domestic issues, PM Imran said that his government is making all-out efforts to provide relief to the downtrodden segment of the society following the model of State of Madina.

Amid the speculations regarding the possible hike in the prices of utilities, he assured that the government is not going to increase the tariffs of electricity and gas.

He also condemned the atrocities of occupation forces in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K) which has been lockdown since August 5 last year when New Delhi revoked its special status.

Before visiting Mohmand district, the premier visited Peshawar and inaugurated the Qayyum Sports Complex.

He said during the ceremony that the PTI government will give an avenue to the youth of rural areas to hone their skills and benefit from opportunities linked to the sporting field.
