KARACHI:
Those supporting the Aurat March in Sindh have been ruling the province over the past 50 years and yet the women here are deprived of their rights, said Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Sunday.

Addressing the 'Takreem-e-Niswan' [Honour of Women] rally carried out by JI in reaction to the Aurat March, Rehman reflected that due to the prevalent feudal system in the province, many women were treated like animals.

He called on the government to ensure that women were not deprived of the rights given to them by Islam, including the right of inheritance. In addition, he stressed the need to establish a transport system exclusively for women, giving them easy access to education and health facilities and doing away with traditions like marrying off females to Holy Quran and giving dowry at the time of marriage.

The general secretary of JI's women's wing, Durdana Siddiqui, said that both men and women were respected in a society based on Islamic principles and justice. Islam guaranteed rights for women and its teachings pertained to protecting those rights, said Siddiqui.

"Today, Islam is the only source of refuge for women struggling for their rights," she claimed, adding that the movements demanding their liberation in fact bound them and added to their responsibilities.
