Respecting differences
Healthy discourse is important for any society to move forward and people need to understand intellectual humility
Time and again we witness disputes, aggression, verbal abuse and physical assault on live TV shows. Many of them that are supposed to be a major source of political, cultural and social awareness have, over time, lost on their very purpose while some have even been reduced to sensationalism. A recent viral video shows the verbal spat between drama writer Khalil-ur-Rehman and female activist Marvi Sirmed that quickly descended into profanity and vulgarity. Such words and insults have no place in our society, let alone the media industry. Viewers may respond in kind and tomorrow many more may attack others on the basis of gender, religion or ethnicity; thus perpetuating intolerance. Content that involves hate speech must be removed immediately and legal action taken against such acts.
While both have the right to their opinion, it needs to be portrayed within the boundaries of decency and civility. After all, “my liberty ends where your nose begins”. Such talk shows have the power to shape public opinion and must therefore abide by a certain code of conduct. Guests and hosts alike should maintain a respectable decorum as the power of influence comes with great responsibility. While there are many social platforms to voice out public opinions, talk shows should only call upon specialists in related fields to provide expert opinion on important matters, while giving citizens the freedom to choose for themselves.
In the case of the upcoming Aurat March, the context of slogans needs to be understood so as to know whether they fall within the purview of necessary regulations. However, acknowledging the grey centre with regard to ethics and freedom, people should critique laws and regulations where dissent is being repressed, rather than foul mouthing others.
