KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah distributed appointment letters to the newly-selected assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) who recently passed the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) exams on Thursday, expressing the hope that they would serve the people of the province with honesty and dedication.

Addressing the ceremony, Shah said that this appointment round was the first phase, while in the second phase, more ASIs would be appointed in line with minority quotas. The ceremony was attended by the Sindh chief secretary, provincial minister Saeed Ghani, Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon, additional home secretary Usman Chachar and advisors to the CM Nisar Khuhro, Murtaza Wahab and Aijaz Jakhrani, among others. Sindh police chief Dr Kaleem Imam was not present.

According to officials, in the recent recruitment phase, 180 male ASIs, ten female ASIs and one minority ASI have been recruited for the Karachi Counter-Terrorism Department, as well as six female ASIs being selected through SPSC.

On the occasion, Shah also refuted reports that the Sindh police were not equipped with the latest weapons. "The Sindh government has strengthened the Sindh police by equipping them with the latest gadgets, weapons and the best training," he claimed, adding that the recruitment has been done purely on merit.

New Sindh IGP to be appointed early next week

Congratulating the newly-inducted cops, he further maintained that the people of Sindh needed the best policing, imploring the new recruits to perform to the best of their abilities. He stated that ASIs who had passed the SPSC exams usually had a long career of 30 to 35 yeas, and most of them would attain the position of DIGs and AIGs.

The CM also directed Memon to impart the best training to the new ASIs, enabling them to become effective police officers.

At the same time, he disclosed that there were over 6,000 vacancies of police constables in the Sindh police, directing the police to initiate recruitment for these posts.

The chief minister also expressed concerns over the lengthy recruitment process for ASIs, pointing out that the appointment process for these ASIs began in 2016 and their selection was announced in 2019, with the final orders only being given to them in February 2020. Chachar and Memon assured him that the recruitment procedure would be simplified.
