LAHORE:
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri on Wednesday said that the third phase of anti-government movement would be initiated on Feb 16 from Charsadda, Peshawar through a workers’ convention, reiterating to continue protest against ‘selector’s selection’ till ‘genuine’ general elections are held.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the JUI-F leader said, “The movement will proceed to Karachi on Feb 23 then to Islamabad on March 1 and later to Lahore on March 19 where the fourth workers’ convention will be held.”

When asked about Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz’s (PML-N) participation in the anti-government protests, Haideri termed the response of opposition — PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) — on Azadi March ‘cold’. However the senator welcomed the parties to initiate discussion.

“The PML-N will decide its position on the movement whether they want to join the protest for the benefit of the people or not,” said Haideri.

For the new round of movement, the senator claimed to have garnered strong support from people to shake the government in case major opposition parties abandoned JUI-F.

Besides, well informed sources within PML-N said that the party had yet no clear stance on Maulana Fazl’s next round of movement against the federal government. The sources added that the party leadership in London would take a final decision about ceremonious or full-fledged participation in the JUI-F movement depending on the things working out abroad.

The senator said that JUI-F’s position was clear: it rejects any prospective government to be formed through a sham mandate. He termed the latest movement a continuation of the party’s Azadi March.

“We have rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s (PTI) government since the day it was selected and have continuously been protesting against it,” said Haideri, adding that the party had taken out 15 marches against the federal government in 2018.

“The government through its incompetence was unable to fulfil any promise made to the people of Pakistan. The people are in utter despair therefore it is important to address issues,” he added.

Briefing about the continuation of Azadi March, the Senator said the movement would take months to bear fruit.

Haideri denied having short term goals for the new movement as the party earlier planned for Azadi March.

“Our movement can be converted into a ‘dharna’ if deemed necessary,” he added.
