HYDERABAD:
Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani has emphasised the need for opening dialysis centres in all talukas of Sindh.

Speaking at the three-day international urology conference, titled '20th Annual PAUS Urology Conference,' at a local hotel in Hyderabad on Friday night, he said the cases of kidney ailments were on a rise in the province and, therefore, provision of health facilities too needed to be expanded.

The event, focusing on the theme of 'urology care for everyone and everywhere', was the first conference of urological surgeons in Hyderabad, and was organised by the Hyderabad chapter of the Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS).

Speaking on the occassion, the speaker said, "There is a need to establish dialysis centres in all talukas," conceding that the Director of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Prof Dr Adib Rizvi, could better identify the places which immediately required the centres based on his visits across the province.

Durrani also advised medical universities and colleges to keep abreast of the advancements in the field of renal diseases and spread awareness among their students. He also asked urological surgeons to set up more kidney transplant centres in the province.

Addressing the conference, Dr Rizvi shared the accomplishments and expansion initiatives of SIUT, saying that patients from all over Pakistan were receiving free health services at the institute. Pointing towards rampant poverty in Pakistan, he said the poor, who could not afford to have two meals in a day, were unable to pay for quality health services provided by the private sector. "This [providing free health services] only becomes possible when we realise that every human being has the right to access best health services."

PAUS Hyderabad chapter's President Prof Dr Shafiqur Rehman Memon, who organised the conference, claimed that the event provided a forum to exchange views on the latest research and knowledge in the field of urology.

Head of Department of Urology, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Dr Javed Altaf Jat said that the pre-symposium workshops, where live surgeries were performed, helped the new urologists bolster their skills. He  added that five surgeries were performed during the workshops by Dr Xiao Bo, Dr Matin Sheriff, Dr Aziz Abdullah, Dr Aasem Chaudhry and Dr Noor Buchholz.

Six scientific and technical sessions have been held so far, including sessions on renal oncology, bladder cancer and surgeries, pediatric urology, reconstructive urology, prostate cancer, as well as, oral and moderated poster presentations, at the conference. The summit also included presentations by notable urologists including Prof Matin Sheriff, Prof Abbas Basiri, Prof Muhammad Shamim Khan, Prof Saeed Akhtar and Prof Hammad Athar, among others.
