CDA to build four pedestrian bridges in Islamabad soon
Officials say work order for the construction and installation of bridges has been issued
ISLAMABAD:
Having already started work on an underpass between Sector G-7 and G-8, the apex civic authority of the federal capital announced on Sunday that it will start construction on overhead bridges at four separate locations in the city soon.
The work order for construction of these bridges has already been issued.
One of these bridges, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) said, will be constructed on the Kashmir Highway near the Sunday bazaar to facilitate pedestrians who frequent the bazaar. The other bridge will be built on Faisal Avenue near the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) hospital for those who frequent the health facility. The third bridge will be constructed along Jinnah Avenue near the Mehran gate of Sector F-9 Park, opposite Sector G-9/2 for those who want to head into the park.
The fourth pedestrian bridge will be constructed near the Pak Secretariat.
CDA said that it has assigned installation work for the pedestrian bridges to the Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC) Taxila, while the work order for the construction and installation of the bridges has also been issued.
The HMC has been given six months to complete the construction and installation of these bridges.
The construction and Installation of these pedestrian bridges are expected to be completed at a cost of Rs174 million.
A breakdown of for the construction of these bridges showed that the overhead bridge to be built at Kashmir Highway will cost Rs51.94 million. The pedestrian bridge on Jinnah Avenue near the Mehran Gate will be constructed at a cost Rs40.12 million.
The pedestrian bridge to be built n Faisal Avenue near Pims will be constructed and installed at a total cost of Rs42.93 million, while the pedestrian bridge at Pak Secretariat will cost Rs38.99 million.
The bridges are being installed to not only allow a safe walkway for pedestrians across major thoroughfares but also to avert accidents and maintain the flow of traffic along these roads.
As a result, the CDA management included the construction and installation of pedestrian bridges amongst its priorities.
In this connection, all hurdles were addressed and after completing formalities. The project concept-I (PC-I) of the project was approved and now work orders have been issued to the contractor for starting installation work on these bridges.
Last month, the CDA started digging on the eastern side of Faisal Avenue as work started on the construction of the underpass between Sector G-7 and Sector G-8. The project is estimated to cost Rs395 million to build, while the CDA has set a six-month deadline to complete the process.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on CDA Affairs Ali Nawaz Awan had also suggested completing one side first before starting work on the other side so to not trouble commuters.
To protect and maintain the green nature of the area, the CDA brought in a tree transplanting device to safely relocate fully grown pine cheer trees which line Faisal Avenue. The trees would have been destroyed during the construction work.
To ensure the smooth flow of traffic while work continues on the underpass, diversions have been set up in consultation with the Islamabad Traffic Police. However, it is unclear if the installation of the pedestrian bridges will require traffic diversions to be set up.
