In 2019, an estimated 158 million devices were shipped to India, making it the second-largest market for smartphones surpassing the US, according to a new report published by Counterpoint Research.

Despite this, China still remains the global leader in the smartphone market and India’s sudden rise to second-place is much to do with Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme that collectively have shipped 72% of devices to India.

Your smartphone is listening to everything you are saying

The report attributes the success to pocket-friendly devices offered by these Chinese smartphone manufacturers as one reason for increasing demand and growth of smartphones in the country.

Apple smartphones were also a hit in India due to the price cuts on iPhone XR models as well as the new releases of the new iPhone 11 series of devices however, for Samsung sales went downhill.

India’s growing economy and population has contributed to the country becoming a large consumer for devices hence smartphone giants have started to take notice of the changing trends and needs of the Indian consumer.

However, the recent outbreak of Coronavirus in China has caused a setback in the smartphone industry because India is still largely dependent on China for supplies of parts such as cells, display panels, camera modules, and printed circuit boards.
