QUETTA:

At least four people, including two officials of the Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL), were killed on Thursday in a remote-controlled bomb attack in Jaffarabad district.

Banned nationalist group Baloch Republican Army (BRA), which has targeted OGDCL employees before, has claimed responsibility for this attack. A spokesperson, who identified himself as Sarbaz Baloch, said the organisation will continue to mount such attacks. The BRA had attacked an OGDCL convoy in March, killing four people and injuring 18.

A convoy of OGDCL employees, escorted by security forces, was on its way to Jacobabad from Dera Murad Jamali when it was attacked near the Dera Allahyar bypass, about 400 kilometres southeast of Quetta. Two security officials were also killed while three others, including two passers-by, were injured.

“A bomb was fitted on to a motorcycle parked by the road and detonated by a remote control when the convoy passed through the area,” Javed Gharshin, Jaffarabad district police officer (DPO), told The Express Tribune. “Anti-state elements are involved in this attack,” he said.

The blast destroyed the vehicle in which employees and some security men were travelling. Security personnel cordoned off the area soon after the explosion and shifted the deceased and injured to a nearby hospital. “Two people were killed instantly while two other succumbed to their injuries soon after reaching the hospital,” sources said.

Those critically injured were shifted to Jacobabad for specialised treatment. They included Kamran Siddiq, OGDCL field officer, Mohammad Bambal, a rickshaw driver, and Syed Mohammad Rasul, a truck driver.

The deceased were identified as Shafiqur Rehman, an OGDCL officer, and driver Mohammad Nawaz. The security personnel were identified as Amjad Ali and Khuda Bakhsh.

The OGDCL is engaged in exploration of gas and oil resources in mineral-rich Balochistan, which has put the organisation under an incessant spate of militant attacks by Baloch separatist groups. The attacks have mostly targeted officials and companies engaged in exploration initiatives in Balochistan.
