Watch:Trailer for R- Rated Mortal Kombat animated film revealed

The premise is primarily based on the first video game in the series

Mortal Kombat fans can rejoice, as the franchise is gearing up for a feature length animated film. Unlike previous film and Tv adaptions, the animated film officially title Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge is R-rated, much in line with the gore centric fighting game.

The trailer of the upcoming feature was dropped exclusively on IGN. By the looks of it, the premise is primarily based on the first video game. Although one could also link it with 2011's MK9 which itself was a re imagining of the first three video games.

As the name suggests, the film would explore Hanza Hasashi, alias Scorpio quest for revenge against Sub-Zero whom he believes to be responsible for the murder of his clan. Meanwhile Raiden and his crew consisting of Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are seen taking part in Mortal Kombat taking place at Shang Tsung's island, to defend Earthrealm against Shao Kahn's invasion.

According to IGN, Patrick Seitz  who voiced Scorpio in the 2011 game would reprise his role in the animated feature. Meanwhile actors from the latest installment from the games are also part of the cast ensemble albeit in different roles.

Joe McHale from the Tv show Community and Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter voice Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade respectively. David B. Mitchell, who portrayed Geras and Sektor in MK11, is cast as Raiden.

A live action remake of the franchise is set to release early next year.
