However, coming back to the question posed in the beginning of this article, Americans are really asking for criticism. To publicly promote gay-lesbian rights in a conservative society and to issue statements on internal security issues of Karachi’s violence is asking for trouble. Commenting on the security situation in another country is against diplomatic norms. Is this a paradigm shift in the US handing of Pakistan? It seems as if the US has decided to be controversial and provocative. US-Pakistan relations are at their lowest ebb. However, both countries need to wait it out with patience and forbearance. Both countries need each other and depend on each other in a lot of critical areas. Only a stable and well-functioning Pakistan is in the larger interest of the world, including America and India.
It is high time for critical and behaviour-changing introspection for both the US and Pakistan. Had the US not plunged itself and Pakistan into the first Afghan war with Ziaul Haq, the world particularly Pakistan, would have been a much safer place today. The US turned Pakistan into a proxy state and waged a war that defeated the Soviet Union but it made the whole world a much more dangerous place to live in. It particularly tore apart the fabric of Pakistani state and society. To add salt to the injuries, the US packed up and left the Afghans high and dry in the late 1980s when the Soviets pulled out, and is now paying a heavy price for deserting them. The US needs to have a long-tunnelled horizon of its policies and not continue with the policy of fighting proxy wars in developing countries.
Pakistan needs to socially re-engineer its establishment and its population. The Pakistani establishment fed by foreign funding has bloated manifolds and has become a state within the state. The majority of Pakistan’s population is fed lies and conspiracy theories, which have little relationship with reality. A largely right wing electronic media is making Pakistanis more paranoid and xenophobic than enlightened. If Pakistan has to change, the change can neither come through arms nor money. It can only come through changing the hearts and minds of people. Peace, tolerance and mutual coexistence has to be relearnt through Pakistan’s own cultural and historic roots. Both Pakistan and America need to change drastically. America needs to stop interfering in Pakistan’s internal affairs and review its recent postures of high-handedness. Pakistan needs to socially re-engineer hearts and minds through a high dosage of critical thinking and the spread of progressive ideas.

cultural and historic roots of 63 yr or 5000 yr. choose one. 63 yr = doomed 5000 yr = Rich & Historic.
Everything will change for the better when we as a nation will begin to change our bad habits for the better. If we do not change our bad habits for the good, starting from the educated masses and lead a mass campaign for it to the illiterate masses by setting up examples, then nothing will change. Yes O' folks, nothing will change as it has not for centuries. The people who are waiting for a leader to come and change their condition are the ones who dream of slavery such people will endure slavery. The good leadership is there for us to accept and practice so do we try to change and accept the successful leadership? Do we? Nothing will change for us just beacuse we do not want to give up our bad habits. Sorry to give this bad news Folks.
Yes, but no change in Master-Slave relationship.
Dear Author,
You say: "Peace, tolerance and mutual coexistence has to be relearnt through Pakistan’s own cultural and historic roots."
Will you please elaborate, at which point, in the country's 60 plus years of existence, all these three were in abundance?
And by the way, what are Pakistan's own cultural and historic roots? I expect a serious answer to this!
So the Che Guevaras are back with a bang :)
To stay away from Washington might be the best option because we would start work to stand on our own feet, which is vital for Pakistan progress and prosperity.
The writer says,"The majority of Pakistan’s population is fed lies and conspiracy theories, which have little relationship with reality. "
But, contradicts herself when she says,"Had the US not plunged itself and Pakistan into the first Afghan war with Ziaul Haq, the world particularly Pakistan, would have been a much safer place today. The US turned Pakistan into a proxy state and waged a war that defeated the Soviet Union but it made the whole world a much more dangerous place to live in. "
The US did not put gun to Pakistan's head like when it did in 2001. Pakistan willingly helped the US and got money in return, along with the support of a Super Power. So, please stop spreading this canard that US did that, US did this. Pakistan is the only one to blame for creating the Mujahideen.
In hindsight it would have been better to not help Pakistan create the Mujahideen but there was no way it could have known that that would lead to the creation of such a deadly group which would harm US interests as US was thousands of miles away from the Region. It made perfect sense for it to back the Mujahideens then, but Pakistan did not have that luxury. It created the monsters alright, but did not want to destroy them. They decided to live with the monsters that they created.
That's Pakistan mythology - a falsehood which has been said over and over until it has taken on credibility which it doesn't deserve. USA didn't plunge Pakistan into the first Afghan war - and no one outside of Pakistan believes that. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan which would put India and India's primary ally on your eastern and western borders -- something that Pakistan saw as a direct threat - to make matters worse everyone who studied Soviet strategic goals knew that obtaining a warm water port was high on their list and Balochistan was ripe for the taking. In short the Soviet invasion was considered a direct threat by Pakistan and you needed no encouragement to assist Afghans in fighting the Soviets. The USA provided training and some weapons, the Saudi's provided money, and Pakistan provided the warriors and infrastructure (and took a piece of every dollar that was exchanged). .. Perhaps the question should be -- had the Soviets won in Afghanistan would Pakistan still exist? And if not -- would the World be a safer place?
Ma'am, if I may : The realization that Pakistan needs to socially re-engineer its establishment and its population is hardly a quixotic task to come up with. Some have echoed the same sentiment when talking about the need for a certain kind of a renaissance in the Muslim world. Ours would, of course, need to be tailor made for Pakistan. However, all of that is besides the point; what, however, is not, is the realization that any such gargantuan task requires solid leadership from the highest echelons to the grass root level. Pray, tell me...where do you see such a person, never mind a whole establishment, who has the clairvoyance, the will and the unequivocal trust of the masses to even kick-start the process...?
I know, the other side of the argument could be that people should themselves commit to this change. Fair..fair enough..however I find it hard to foresee that a country, like Pakistan, which finds herself intricately divided along ethno-religious lines with anything from the mundane to your religion or history being highly politicized, is ready for such a change. Additionally because religion and ethnicity has become such a passion evoking thing (much more so than it used to be), isn't it unrealistic for us to assume that the disgruntled masses who have been fed such venomous bile to deflect blame by their respective leaders are going to be remotely amenable to change. Do you think a day laborer in Baluchistan who has been told that Punjab and the Punjabi's have embezzled most of the funds appropriated for you, or that the Pathans have infiltrated your land and are taking over your jobs or that the Army - nay..the Punjabi army, is responsible for the insurgency here, is going to investigate all of the assertions or is it more realistic to assume that, more often than not, he is going to take them on face-value. How can then we be remotely hopeful that somehow a bout of tolerance is going to replace the rampant -phobias and paranoia in the land of the pure. We are very much a divided house and the hard-pressed masses can't be bothered with relearning anything when they are being ripped off by everyone. The one thing that has an outsiders chance of remedying this mess and re-integrating some basic values in the generation of tomorrow is leadership...and frankly, our last and only leader died in '48.
emphasized text"Both Pakistan and America need to change drastically." It doesn't matter who needs what. It's the Almighty who decides. Pray five times a day and leave it him.Everything will be fine.

Really? And what would have we done with all the Afghan refugees who had entered Paksitan after the Soviet Invasion. With the Soveits in control over Afghanistan, what we have done then? Peace and harmony?
The US turned Pakistan into a proxy state and waged a war that defeated the Soviet True, but we were more than happy to wage Jihad against the godless communists, egged on by the Saudis. Why arnt you mentioning Saudi Arabia?
You are criticizing the right-wing agenda but your blame America foreign policy views hardly differ from them?
So in short --- Pakistan needs to totally change how it operates and America needs to shut up and not criticize Pakistan --- that about sum it up? Ain't going to happen.
Your input is based on facts.
we believe in democracy we need democracy at the cost of rotten government which is exacerbating..like every writer also she suggests a few initiatives that should be taken by the government at the earliest...to my mind, this system cannot serve the needs to all and sundry..
The following quote: "The US needs to have a long-tunnelled horizon of its policies and not continue with the policy of fighting proxy wars in developing countries."
Should be rephrased as:
"Pakistan needs to have a long-tunnelled horizon of its policies and not continue with the policy of fighting proxy wars in neighboring countries."
"Both Pakistan and America need to change drastically. America needs to stop interfering in Pakistan’s internal affairs and review its recent postures of high-handedness. Pakistan needs to socially re-engineer hearts and minds" . Honestly mam , its lot more easy for america to stop interfering in pakistan's internal affair that what you ask from pakistan which is socially re-engineer hearts and minds ...I bet!

Mr Ejaz Haider, time to provide more 'facts' to the public at large.
