Rawalpindi Police on Saturday arrested a cleric for his alleged involvement in sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl, Express News reported.

The suspect, identified as Ghasr Ali, taught at the Madrassa where the minor studied.

People across Pakistan were outraged and many took to the streets in 2018 when reports surfaced that six-year-old Zainab Ansari had been raped and murdered.

Two years after the incident, the National Assembly on Friday approved the Zainab Alert, Recovery and Response Bill 2019.

The bill proposes action against police officials who cause unnecessary dealys and/or fail to respond to such such cases. The convicts of child sexual abuse will be given a life sentence along with Rs1 million in fines. The minimum sentence is 10 years.

The bill has also proposed establishing a helpline to report missing children and an agency to issue alert.
