Former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Tuesday challenged the court’s proceedings, seeking to indict him in two rental power references.
Ashraf is accused of receiving more than Rs22 billion mobilisation advance – during his tenure as minister for water and power – from the government to commission the rental power projects but failed to set up the plants.
The ex-premier raised the objections in view of the recent amendments made in NAB Ordinance 1999.
The proceedings started with Islamabad Accountability Court judge Azam Khan taking up the Gulf and Reshma rental power references against the former premier.
The PPP leader did not appear before the court due to the exemption granted to him.
Ashraf’s counsel maintained that after the promulgation of amendments in the NAB ordinance, his client could not be indicted and that he be acquitted.
The NAB prosecutor argued that no changes had been made in Section 10B of the ordinance.
He said that 12 references of irregularities in rental power projects were pending before the court.
The court directed Ashraf’s counsel to submit the objections in writing and adjourned the hearing till January 23.
