ISLAMABAD:
President Dr Arif Alvi has said the country has a huge market for different insurance products, stressing the need to create awareness among the common man about the benefits of availing such products.

“The people should be made to understand the benefits of getting themselves or their goods and properties insured,” the president said while addressing a seminar titled 'Growth of insurance industry and the role of Ombudsman' here on Tuesday.

The event was jointly organised by the Express Publications and the Jubilee Life Insurance Company Limited.

Federal Insurance Ombudsman Dr Khawar Jameel, Jubilee Life Insurance Group Head Muhammad Zahid Burke, Insurance Association of Pakistan Chairman Mohammad Hussain Hirji and Express Publications Chief Executive Officer Ijazul Haq addressed the seminar. Ajmal Sattar Malik of the Express Editor Forum handled the hosting duty.
“A gap exists somewhere despite a huge potential market for insurance products,” President Alvi said, urging the stakeholders to expand their network through effective marketing strategies.

“Generally, the people have not had a good experience with insurance products; therefore, they should be encouraged to get insurance in different categories like health, or property,” he added.

The president also referred to the government's flagship social security programme of health insurance through distribution of Insaf Health Cards, which “offer a very good package to the deserving people”. “The insurance companies could embark upon and cooperate in such programmes,” he added.

The insurance companies should focus on expansion of their market, artificial intelligence and risk management, he said, adding that all the terms and conditions about different insurance products should be explicitly conveyed to the interested people.

About the offices of the ombudsmen, the president said they had been expeditiously resolving disputes and the public should be properly educated about their effective role.

He said the media could highlight different issues related to health, women rights, drugs, cleanliness and food shortage.

He noted that nations were groomed when all sections of the society played their due part in national building, adding that the responsible countries always took the lead by keeping their citizens well informed.

The president said issues like terrorism had been overcome and now the country was passing through the national-building phase, and called upon all strata of the society to play their role in that regard.

The president lauded the Express Publications for sponsoring the seminar on such an important topic.
Earlier, Federal Insurance Ombudsman Dr Khawar Jameel highlighted the functioning and role of his office. “The insurance industry in the country is thriving,” he said, underlining the need to protect rights of all stakeholders.

The Group Head of Jubilee Life Insurance, Burke, said, “Our job is to take care of the rights of the policyholders while the role of the federal insurance ombudsman is to expand the industry.”
He highlighted the benefits of availing health insurance. “It covers expenses in the hospital which are well beyond the reach of the common man,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Insurance Association of Pakistan Chairman Hirji said, “The 37 insurance companies in the country are doing their best in safeguarding the interest of the people from loss and uncertainty.”

He said the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan has played a key role in the growth of the insurance industry.
The Express Publications CEO said, "Today's event is a matter of pride for our company."

Ijazul Haq lauded President Alvi for gracing the event with his presence.

The purpose of the seminar is to inform the people about the importance of the insurance industry, Haq said, adding that the Express Publications had previously held several public awareness seminars.

The CEO praised the federal insurance ombudsman for resolving most of the insurance issues.
