LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Cell has arrested a suspect who allegedly deceived a woman on social media by posing himself as former minister of water and power Abid Sher Ali.

Lahore FIA Deputy Director Cyber Crime Chaudhry Sarfraz formed a team, on the request of a victim named Maryam Gul, who accused Rashid of deceiving her by making false promises of giving a job at Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

The Cyber Crime cell has sent the FIR against Syed Mohammad Rashid Irfan, a resident of Faisalabad, to the Investigation cell.

The deputy director told The Express Tribune that Maryam Gul informed the Cyber Crime cell that she communicated with a man named Syed Mohammad Rashid Irfan on the social media platform Facebook.

Gul, stating the details, said the person claimed to be former minister of water and power Abid Sher Ali and made a promise to get her a job in WAPDA, which she believed. Reportedly, she gave the accused money demanded by him for the job-related purpose.

WAPDA contributed 31.4b units of electricity in FY19

However, despite accepting the money, the accused did not fulfill his promise and instead came to meet Gul in a restaurant on Jail Road where an FIA Cyber Crime team arrested him, after confirming his identity.

Separately, the crime cell has arrested 11 culprits for harassing college and university-going female students and seized mobile phones, SIM cards and other malicious material from their possession.

The deputy director advised that women in colleges, universities and homes should not reveal their private details to any strangers on social media platforms, especially in regards to employment. He suggested women to refrain from giving money to anyone and abstain from sharing personal life and issues with strangers. Furthermore, government job openings are always published in newspapers, he highlighted.
