SC orders court to make decision in Amal Umar case within three months

SC adjourns the hearing for a month

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the trial court to make a decision in the Amal Umer murder case within three months.

Amal, a 10-year-old girl, lost her life when a stray bullet hit her during a police encounter on August 13, 2018.

Counsel of the Sindh government maintained that the two personnel who shot at Amal Umer were dismissed and a notification for help in the court order has been issued to the victim’s parents, along with Rs 5 million as monetary help.

The chief justice replied that Amal died as a result of police firing and questioned what help the police could offer.

“Monetary help cannot be an alternative to one’s life,” he said.

The counsel of Amal’s parents said the inquiry against National Medical Centre (NMC) has been completed.

Advocate Faisal Siddiqui said that the investigation mentioned that NMC had tampered the documents and Sindh Healthcare Commission had fined a penalty of Rs 0.5m to NMC.

The counsel of the victim’s parents maintained that the NMC chairman refused to accept the report and said NMC is not responsible for the child’s death.

Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah asked why the Sindh government did not submit the report officially.

The court directed the Sindh government to give the report to Amal’s parents and said the victim’s parents can submit objections to the report.

The Supreme Court adjourned the case hearing for a month.
