Crown Prince’s visit
It was Imran’s third meeting with the crown prince — the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince was in Islamabad for a few hours on Thursday, during which it was announced that the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development would allocate $200 million to support small and medium economic projects in Pakistan.
Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed met with Prime Minister Imran Khan to discuss “regional and international issues of mutual interest as well as ways to enhance bilateral ties,” according to a tweet by the royal.
It was Imran’s third meeting with the crown prince — the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates — in less than a year.
According to UAE media, the Crown Prince and the PM discussed the situation in the Middle East, Arabian Gulf, Indian Sub-continent and the Islamic world. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues. The Foreign Office issued a statement saying the visit illustrates the strength and substance of the Pakistan-UAE “special relationship”.
UAE media also reported the Crown Prince as congratulating Imran and Pakistan on the New Year wishing that 2020 would be a year of peace and development.
He spoke of the friendship between the two nations and praised Pakistan’s role in maintaining regional peace and security in the Arabian Gulf.
The Crown Prince also called Pakistan an essential pillar within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, perhaps in an indirect reference to the Kuala Lumpur summit.
Imran thanked him for supporting Pakistan’s economy and development sector and praised Sheikh Mohamed for his keenness to enhance bilateral relations and the pivotal role he plays in promoting development and peace.
As for financial assistance, it aims to encourage innovation in projects and support entrepreneurship while assisting the PTI government’s efforts to stabilise the economy and move towards sustainable development. UAE media called the initiative “part of the close ties between the UAE and Pakistan and the keenness of their leaderships to strengthen and develop.”
