“Gul Makai, the biopic on Malala Yousafzai is set to release on January 31, 2020. The film stars Reem Shaikh as Malala, Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni, Mukesh Rishi and Pankaj Tripathi. It is directed by H E Amjad Khan and produced by Sanjay Singla, Dr Jayantilal Gada and Tekno Films presentation,” he tweeted.
Directed by Amjad Khan, the biopic has been majorly shot in Kashmir and traces the then socio-political atmosphere of Pakistan. Actors Reem Shaikh, Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajaz Khan will be seen in the film. Pankaj Tripathi has also joined the cast.
The first motion poster of Gul Makai was unveiled last year in July and it revealed a glimpse of the fire that Malala fought against. Amjad Khan had also shared that Gul Makai is his tribute to Yousafzai for everything she has achieved and represents as a young and inspiring icon. Actor Kabir Bedi also commented, “This is about those times when the Taliban was destroying Pakistan and Afghanistan in the name of Jihad and religion. When from a very small village in Pakistan, a voice arose.”
Recently, a United Nations reports also named Malala as the world’s most famous teenager of the decade, adding, “From a young age, Pakistani student Malala Yousafzai was known for speaking out in favour of educating girls and highlighting the atrocities of the Taliban.”
The film’s official synopsis reads, “Gul Makai accounts the courageous journey and struggle of Malala, from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming the champion for free education to all.” It adds, “Gul Makai is a small tribute to this lion-hearted girl who is in every essence a global citizen championing a cause that transcends boundaries, caste, religion and geography.”
Gul Makai is the pseudonym Malala used when she wrote blogs for BBC Urdu during the Talibani rule. She was shot in her head and neck by the terrorists for going to school, after which she fought her fate and survived. The young activist came out even stronger than before, becoming an inspiration for women and children around the globe. In 2014, she was given the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and continued her fight for women’s rights and education.
