Grave matters: Man shoots nephew after trying to bury him alive
Mumtaz also shot his wife accusing her of having an affair with Sabir.
MULTAN:
A man tried to bury his nephew alive when he was discovered and then shot him.
According to police officials, Nishtar Colony resident Mumtaz was trying to bury his nephew Sabir alive, when he was discovered by Sabir’s father and cousins. On Monday, deceased Sabir’s father Sajjad Hussain Baloch filed a case against Mumtaz for murdering his son.
“We caught him in the act. He had dug up a grave and was in the midst of burying him when we called out. Then he immediately shot him in the chest,” Baloch told police.
According to Baloch and his nephews Saeed and Bashir, the incident took place in the middle of the night. The men said that they had seen Mumtaz drag Sabir out to the graveyard near his house and was pouring rubble on him when he was discovered. “He immediately shot him and ran away. We tried to chase after him but we were busy trying to save our cousin,” Bashir told police officials.
Mumtaz also shot his wife Rukhsana as she came to try and rescue Sabir.
“He suspected them of having an affair. That is why he killed Sabir. He shot Rukhsana in the shoulder and she is out of danger,” Saeed said. “My husband’s fears were wrong. Sabir had been staying with us for a few days and I was giving him food when he came in and began accusing us of having an affair,” she told police officials.
Baloch said that rescue officials had to dig up the grave again to examine Sabir’s body. “We found him but there was no chance he could be alive. He was probably struggling when he was shot,” said Rescue 1122 official Kareemullah. Police officials have sent the body for an autopsy to Nishtar Hospital.
“We have sent the body for a post mortem. The victim was shot in the chest twice but his throat was clogged with mud so he probably died of that first,” said Emergency attending Dr Salman Athar.
Cantonment police officials are conducting a thorough investigation.
“We have registered the case and are speaking to everyone in the neighbourhood. The primary witness, Mumtaz’s wife and brother have both said that he was seen trying to bury Sabir alive and we have sealed off the crime scene, where we exhumed the grave,” SHO Rameez Khan said.
Mumtaz has fled the district but police officials have ensured that they will catch the accused within the week.
