Security tightened around province’s churches

Plan stipulates deployment of snipers on rooftops of churches

A total of 6,000 police would perform duty on the Christmas and Quaid-e-Azam Day on December 25, said Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Rai Babar Saeed.

According to the Christmas security plan, the police force would be deputed at 623 churches across Lahore. They include six SPs, 35 DSPs, 84 inspectors and 322 upper subordinates, the DIG added. The police would follow the newly issued standard operating procedures (SOPs), given by Punjab IGP Shoaib Dastagir, he assured.

The DIG maintained that monitoring through closed-circuit television cameras of sensitive churches would be carried out and people entering churches would be body-searched at the gates. He said that security audit of all churches of the city had been completed as there were 559 churches of Category A, 84 of Category B, 379 of Category C whereas 101 churches of Category D. Lahore CCPO Zulfiqar Hameed told The Express Tribune that there are 153 Christian settlements are situated in Lahore.

Reportedly, snipers will be deployed on the roofs of these churches which will closely monitor movements around churches. The parking lots will be arranged 100 metres away from the churches.

In Bahawalpur, a meeting was held at the district police office on Tuesday to review the traffic management plan for Christmas Day and Quaid-e-Azam Day. In Faisalabad, the district police finalised foolproof security arrangements for Christmas on Tuesday. Police officials said that the district had been divided into three zones and over 2,300 police personnel will perform security duty in the district. Christmas celebrations will be held at 339 places in the district for which 2,300 police officials, 419 ASIs and 76 inspectors will perform duty that would be monitored by 17 general police officers.

In Sargodha, the district administration and police have prepared a comprehensive plan to arrange security of 104 churches across the district on Christmas (Wednesday). Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh chaired a meeting of inter-faith harmony where the religious coordination committee said that all persons have equal rights in the country.
