Technical education body asked to focus on practicals
TEVTA board approves the establishment of a new polytechnic institute in Peshawar

The provincial chapter of technical education and vocational training body has been asked to revert the examination system from theoretical to practical while focusing on providing skills required by the market the at national and international level.
This was urged by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on Friday as he chaired a board of directors meeting of the K-P Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) in Peshawar.
To ensure that students are employable when they graduate, CM Mahmood stated that competency-based testing should be implemented by the institute so that students gain practical and technical knowledge as sought by the market.
The board also approved the execution of an Annual Development Programme (ADP) scheme regarding the establishment of a Government Polytechnic Institute (GPI) in the Mathra neighbourhood of Peshawar through a budgetary allocation of Rs17.24 million.
Earlier, decisions taken in the last K-P TEVTA board meeting were reviewed. Decisions on setting up the Chief Minister Free Technical Education Programme, recruitment on vacant posts in the institution, upgrading the government technical and vocational colleges (GTVC) in Chakdara and Matta area of Swat to the level of GPIs, upgrading the Haripur GPI to the level of a GCT, activating a GPI at Timergara, setting up a committee to review draft rules of business for institute management committees, amending the K-P TEVTA regulations, monitoring K-P TEVTA projects, creating posts for vocational counseling officer and others.
The board approved a revised budget for the fiscal year 2018-19. It proposed a revised budget for the fiscal year 2019-20 worth Rs3.99 billion (inclusive of the developmental and operational budget).
The board also approved the project concept-I (PC-I) for the establishment of GTVC at Bakhshali with a sub-campus in the Sawal Dher Industrial estate in Mardan at a cost of Rs120.04 million, purchasing 10 kanals of land for setting up the GPI in Matta and the GTVC in Matta, approving the PC-I for the establishment of GTVC at Pind Cargo Khan in Abbottabad at a cost of Rs159.88 million, six months mandatory training curricula for K-P TEVTA teaching staff, executing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Market and Employment Projects (MEP), launching gems and jewellery training and manufacturing centres on project mode for a year, and amendments in K-P TEVTA regulations 2019.
The board also provisionally approved a PC-I for establishing a GTVC for boys in Bannu for Rs146.998 million.
