IGP’s absence at public safety commission meeting irks members

The agenda included the report on the action taken against manufactures and smugglers of gutka, mainpuri and narcotics

KARACHI: A unanimous resolution was passed at the third meeting of the Provincial Public Safety and Police Commission on Friday to express displeasure over the second consecutive absence of Sindh IGP Dr Kaleem Imam at the meetings of the commission. The meeting, headed by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the CM House, was attended by commission members - Sharjeel Inam Memon, Imdad Ali Pitafi, Muhammad Ali Aziz, Shahnaz Begum, Shamim Mumtaz, Karamat Ali, Advocate Jhamat Mal, Qurban Ali Malano - and Adviser to Sindh CM on Law, Environment and Coastal Development Barrister Murtaza Wahab.

The agenda on Friday included the report on the action taken against manufactures and smugglers of gutka, mainpuri and narcotics which was supposed to be submitted by the IGP. The report was to include details pertaining to the manufacturing units sealed, cases registered, arrest made, case properties held and the cases challenged in courts. Other items on the agenda included a review of the reports submitted by the IGP pertaining to the issue of students at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Shaheed Benazirabad, incident of child beating in Mehrabpur, Pirjo Goth suicide incident, progress of establishment of District Public Safety and Police Complaints Commission.

The CM said that the IGP had informed him of an urgent meeting convened by the prime minister for which the IGP had flown to Islamabad. However, another member disclosed that the meeting had been scheduled well in advance.
