Sc Gives Govt Six Months For Legislation For Appointment Of Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa



The Supreme Court gave the government six months to legislate and iron out the lacunae in the reappointment or extension of tenure of an army chief – paving the way for the incumbent, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, to stay on until a new law determined his terms of service. After three days of grueling court proceedings and legal lacunae, A three-member bench of the apex court, comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Mian Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, issued the verdict in the high-stake case following the state’s chief law officer submitted an undertaking to the court that parliament would bring in a new law on the matter within six months. The court had suspended a notification issued by the prime minister in August for Gen Qamar’s reappointment till 2022 citing procedural loopholes.

Queen Maxima Of Netherlands Arrived In Pakistan On A Three Days Visit



Queen Maxima of the Netherlands arrived in Pakistan on a three-day visit in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Advocate (UNSGSA) for inclusive finance for development. The queen, accompanied by a six-member delegation, was welcomed by officials of Pakistan’s foreign ministry and the Dutch embassy. The Dutch queen, during her visit, met President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan besides holding talks with a range of stakeholders from the public and private sectors. The queen also attended the launch of the Micro Payment Gateway, an initiative of the State Bank of Pakistan.

Pakistani Girl Wins International Figure Skating Tournament In Austria



Twelve-year-old Pakistani girl, Mallak Faisal Zafar, won an international competition for figure skating in Austria, beating hundreds of other contestants from around the world.  The young girl secured the first position in the two day Basic Novice Girls II category at the 24th international Eiscup Inssbruck 2019. Zafar represented Spain, against 22 skaters from Italy and Austria, among other countries.  Mallak has been practicing skating since the age of five and now aspires to represent Pakistan at the winter Olympic.

Uber Loses Licence To Operate In London 



Uber will not be granted a new license to operate in London after repeated safety failure. The authorities found that more than 14,000 trips were taken with drivers who had faked their identity on the firm’s app. The regulator said the taxi app was not “fit and proper” as a license holder, despite having made a number of positive changes to its operations. Uber initially lost its license in 2017 but was granted two extensions, the most recent of which expired last week. The firm will appeal and can continue to operate during that process. London is one of Uber’s top five markets globally and it has about 45,000 drivers in the city. Overall, there are 126,000 licensed private hires and black cabs in the capital.

Twitter Furious Over Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’ Hurting Religious Sentiments



#BoycottDabangg3 has been trending on Twitter since last week after a section of netizens expressed dismay over Salman Khan’s upcoming movie, claiming it hurts Hindu sentiments. They mentioned a scene in the song Hud Hud Dabangg, which shows sadhus (holy men) clad in saffron and dancing with guitars in their hands, is aimed at “maligning” and “insulting” Hindu culture, and hence demanded the boycott of the Sonakshi Sinha-starrer. The micro-blogging platform has been abuzz with angry tweets from users. One tweeted, “#BoycottDabangg3. In the film, sages have been depicted as dancing with Salman in a hideous and objectionable manner on the bank of a river. Some sages are shown playing guitar in a western style.” Another wrote, “Bollywood is doing all such miserable things for fame and money. They are not bothered about our religious sentiments. We have to make them think about this. Strong demand #BoycottDabangg3”. Some even demanded an apology from the film’s lead actor and co-producer Salman Khan.

Two K-Pop Stars Sentenced To Prison For Rape



A South Korean Central District Court found two K-pop stars guilty of illicit sexual relations with a woman who was unable to resist and sentenced them to up to six years in prison. Singer-song writer Jung Joon-young was also convicted of filming women without their consent and sharing them in a group chat with friends, the singer received a six-year prison term and former boy band member Choi Jong-hoon a five –year term in prison. The court said in a statement that they were convicted of committing “special quasi-raping” which it said means multiple people collaborating to have illicit sexual intercourse with a person who was unconscious or unable to resist”.
