AJK elections: Muslim Conference wins from Bagh
PPP's Qamar got 18,260 votes, while Akbar managed to scrape a win with 19,217 votes.
MUZAFFARABAD:
Mir Akbar, the candidate from the outgoing ruling party, the Muslim Conference, won the election for a seat on the Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Bagh (LA-15).
Akbar’s lead over his nearest rival, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Zia Qamar, was less than 1,000 votes. Qamar got 18,260 votes, while Akbar managed to scrape a win with 19,217 votes.
The election was held on only 10 polling stations, the remainder having voted during the main election on June 26. While the votes cast today had a slight majority for Qamar, the margin of Akbar’s lead from the earlier polling was wide enough to ensure his victory.
With this victory, the Muslim Conference’s total seat count comes to four from the 41 elected members of the AJK assembly. The PPP, on the other hand, has enough seats to form a government.
Meanwhile, the PPP candidate Abdul Majid Khan won the election in LA-41, representing the Kashmiri diaspora in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Abbottabad. He defeated the joint candidate from Jamaat-e-Islami and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Abdul Bari.
