Workshop: Managing disasters through improved communication

Speakers stress on strong network for effective relief.

Speakers at a workshop emphasised the importance of a strong communication network for smooth and effective humanitarian response during disasters.


Addressing the concluding ceremony of a five-day national media and communication workshop, Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) Secretary General Muhammad Ilyas Khan said that a strong network of communication, timely and accurate information help organisations with prompt response and helps in minimising losses and miseries of the most vulnerable.

The workshop was jointly organised by PRSC in collaboration with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).


Khan said PRCS is focusing on a strong communication network and in this regard has developed a communication strategy 2015 with an aim to develop a chain that links the field to the highest level of command. Ilyas stated that PRCS has learnt lessons from major disasters.

ICRC Communication Delegate Michel O’ Brain stressed the need for a strong and viable communication network, and greater cooperation among partners.

He said timely and proper information can save many lives. He also gave a detailed presentation on various modes of communication to the participants.

Brian said the ICRC will fully support the PRCS provincial branches in building a communication infrastructure. The workshop was attended by PRCS media and communication officials from
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan, FATA and Sindh. Their ICRC counterparts from these areas were also present.
