Painting award exhibit opens today
The exhibition is part of Islamabad Art Festival
As part of the annual Islamabad Art Festival 2019, an exhibition of artwork submitted for the ‘Arjumand Painting Award 2019’ is set to open today at Gallery 6.
This biennial award, one of few to be awarded by a private art gallery in Pakistan at the national level for young artists between 25 - 40 years of age, was founded in 2015 by Gallery6.
As many as 139 artists submitted their work for the award this year, far more than last year, signifying the growing interest amongst younger artists for the award.
“The purpose of the award is to emphasise the importance of the classically recognised characteristics of a quality painting amongst new, emerging and recently-established artists and to fill a void for the appreciation and recognition of outstanding emerging painters.,” explained Gallery6 Director Usama Arjumand.
“Gallery6’s conviction is that the award will generate and maintain the public’s interest in the classical art form of painting, as it is dwindling with the increasing use of computers and other technologies in art,” Usama added.
Walking through the award process, he said that during the first round, all the pieces which had been submitted were reviewed in early October and 44 submissions were shortlisted.
All of these paintings were then meticulously displayed in the gallery’s hall. The best amongst these were then judged during a special session on Sunday by five well-known art personalities including Rahat Masud, Mobina Zuberi, veteran artist RM Naeem, Sana Arjumand and Irfan Gul Dahri.
This exhibition will remain on display until November 30.
