KARACHI: Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Law, Environment and Coastal Development Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated a chest pain unit (CPU) of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Moosa Lane, Lyari on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, he suggested that the healthcare facility may open a similar unit at Karachi Central Jail so that the prisoners are provided cardiac health facilities and emergency treatment in case a prisoner suffers a cardiac arrest. It will help save many lives, he said.

“This is the 11th CPU established in Karachi and 13th in Sindh,” he said, adding that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is using containers to “serve humanity.”

Wahab said that when the control of NICVD was transferred to the Sindh government in 2011, under the 18th Amendment, it was in a “precarious condition.” It was only after PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took personal interest in upgrading the healthcare facility that the hospital’s wing in Karachi was revamped and NICVD’s satellite centres were established across Sindh, he added.

Further praising the operations of the health facility, the provincial advisor said that NICVD’s satellite centres cater to heart patients 24 hours a day for free. Also speaking on the occasion, NICVD Executive Director Nadeem Qamar said that the “CPU, which is linked to the NICVD’s satellite centre at Lyari General Hospital where all cardiac care facilities including angioplasty and angiography are available, is a gift for the people of Lyari.”

He further said, “We are expanding the network of CPUs in Sindh as these have helped save thousands of lives over the period of the last two years.” So far, lives of 7,000 patients, who have had acute heart attacks, were saved by the doctors and paramedics at these units, he said.
