"They discussed various topics of mutual interest and ways to improve regional security," the US embassy said in a statement after Petraeus met his Pakistani counterpart General Ashfaq Kayani.
The talks came after Washington decided to withhold a third of its annual $2.7 billion security assistance to Islamabad after dozens of American military trainers were ordered to leave after a May 2 raid that killed Osama bin Laden.
The cuts of $800 million reportedly include about $300 million used to reimburse Pakistan for the cost of deploying more than 100,000 soldiers along the Afghan border, a hotbed of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Pakistan has been adamant that there should be no more unilateral American raids, like that which killed Bin Laden in the garrison town of Abbottabad, although the White House has said it will act again if necessary.
Petraeus also met with US ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter and received updates on the security assistance mission to Pakistan, the embassy said.
Accompanying General Petraeus was Marine Lieutenant General John Allen who will succeed him as commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

@Sohaib Irshad:
On Thursday, Pakistani spy chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha met acting CIA director Michael Morell in Washington.
At the same time General David Petraeus, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, visited Pakistan for security talks with its army chief on Thursday amid high tensions between Washington and Islamabad.
Who is becoming regular CIA director in Washinton next week ?
Ans: The same General David Petraeus, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
What does it mean ?
@Roflcopter: Sorry forgot to send the link! http://tribune.com.pk/story/209495/pakistan-will-continue-busting-private-cia-rings-pasha-to-tell-us/ Regards, Mirza
@Roflcopter: My aim in life is to get the truth out of the OBL's friends and associates. I have no other interest except quest for the truth and whole truth. If demanding truth irritates some so be it. There are some people in the world who are not liars and expect the same from the others. Only yesterday, I read this news regarding Pasha’s one day dash to the US. According to this news he was supposed to convey a short but tough message to the US. I am a scientist and do not make things up. I have no vested interest and not a member of any political party except Democratic Party for local activities. Pakistan should be ruled by an elected govt no matter who there are. India is no better than us in any way, except they have kept their army in their control and it is a public servant. If there were no democracy in India, it would have split more times than Pakistan. Whether you believe it or not some native Pakistanis also like democracy, freedom and are not hate mongers. It is sad and biggest insult to my country of birth that my demanding the truth can hurt the army and Pakistan! As a Muslim, I would expect nothing but the truth. If you cannot handle the difference of opinion without personal attack then you should remember that after namaz an ordinary man questioned Hazrat Omar that why did he take twice the fabric than ordinary Muslims? Nobody called that ordinary man any names or exhibited hate. I am the same ordinary man asking for truth, is it asking too much from the army generals (I have no problem with the jawans)? Thanks and regards, Mirza
Pakistan against liars who lied and destroyed country Iraq by lying about WMDs. Currently they are terror bombing civillians in Libya. Be very careful when we talk to US & UK.
@Sohaib Irshad: How can poor little me confused the nation? I don't know the truth about the presence of OBL and who was protecting him. The army is not offering their side of the story. The Americans are "liars", where does one get the truth? Without going into too many protocols, who is going to tell us the truth and when? Pasha is not an independent country's king. He is still working under Kayani and the govt. I forgot, thinking and questioning the army in Pakistan is "treason" but breaking the constitution is not. Nothing personal without the facts and full truth, I am not the only confused Pakistani! Regards, Mirza
I think Gen Petraeus was petrified to meet ISI Chief Pasha, and that is why, he has chosen to visit Pak exactly during the time when Pasha is not in the country.
This kind of positive thinking really makes me feel good ..... :)
Yes sir..yes sir...please resume aid..yes sir..ok sir...
@Mirza, do you ever stop bashing the army? how do you know Pasha went to U.S. just to give them a short message? man the indians here post some silly comments.
Tough talks and threats by the Pak army to the USA since Abbotabad. What about same to the Afghan Taliban and Al Quida who have turned Pakistan into their both killing field and base ? Do not Taliban and Al Qaida operations from soil of Pakistan violate sovereignty of Pakistan ?
@Mirza One cannot discuss issues beyond his capacity. Pasha went there to meet CIA chief. These are not family gatherings. ISAF chief meets our chief. ISI meeting CIA chief in USA. Stop confusing people around.
"Accompanying General Petraeus was Marine Lieutenant General John Allen who will succeed him as commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)"
Only yesterday Gen Pasha went to the US to give a short tough message to American generals! He could not give that to the US generals visiting Pakistan? Too much extra money for a quick trip to the other side of the globe! Or he went in hiding and away so as not to answer the visiting US generals?
