January 23, 2020

T.Edit chats with Zahra who now focuses on making people look their absolute best.

What inspired you to become a beautician and how has your journey been so far in this field?

To be honest, make-up was my true calling. I can’t bear it if I see someone with patchy foundation, bad brows or a lip colour that just doesn’t pop. My aesthetics are very strong and I cannot see a pretty face with bad make-up so I decided to make it my profession. The shift from being a dentist to a MUA is maybe something that confuses people. Given both my mom and dad are doctors, spending five years of my life studying and training to become a dentist is something I always thought I was supposed to do. However, I have always had this spark and desire in me to do something more creative. This may sound cliché, but my story is a story of following a passion that I have always had.

What is your area of expertise?

My beauty lounge is not restricted to just a few services but our make-up is our strength. You definitely have to visit to understand what we really offer, but all I can say is we as a team will make it our utmost priority to make sure you leave happily.

What are some of the make-up and hair trends that your salon is offering?

From no make-up looks to complete formal make-up looks, we keep in mind the unique face every person has and how to accentuate, rather than camouflage them. We want people to experiment with their looks like colour blocking, graphic eyeliner and glossy lips since they’re trending. We want to give people the confidence to carry such looks. In the world of hair, we are unafraid and limitless. We live to create different looks- we’re offering textured and floral buns/ braids, beach waves and the best blow outs which last up to two days (for sure)!

What are the challenges that come with your job?

I have to be 100 percent sure of what sort of make-up would suit a face structure before I start with make-up, especially on brides, as you can’t go wrong on their big day! Apart from that, sometimes it’s really difficult to figure out what the client really wants, some clients have an exact image in their minds but I need to understand from that imagination if it’s the proper look according to their face cut and then advise them accordingly.

Who or what is your greatest professional and personal strength?

My mom.

In your opinion, what social stigma does society need to get over?

Social stigmas? Loads! But I’ll just talk about what needs to immediately change. The use of lighter tones of foundation than your actual skin tone- society needs to realise that beauty isn’t in the lighter skin tone, but the way every skin tone is carried with confidence.

What is the most gratifying part about your job?

That’s an easy one. A happy client of course!
