New chief secretary reiterates commitment to fighting disease

Commissioners and deputy commissioners have been directed to play a greater role in fighting the poliovirus in the province.
This was stated by the newly appointed K-P Chief Secretary Dr Kazim Niaz as he chaired a meeting of the Provincial Task Force on Polio Eradication in Peshawar on Monday.
During the meeting, Dr Niaz said, “the provincial government is fully committed to eradicating the poliovirus from the province, and as such there will be no compromise on the quality and effectiveness of polio campaigns.”
“Though it is a challenging task to eradicate the poliovirus from the province but the day is not too far away when we will accomplish it,” he optimistically concluded.
Three more polio cases confirmed in K-P, two in Sindh
The chief secretary added that the provincial government is ready to utilise all available resources to safeguard future generations against the crippling disease.
Provincial Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Coordinator Abdul Basit gave a detailed briefing on various aspects of the polio eradication programme in K-P with special focus on the challenges confronting the polio programme.
Various suggestions on improving the anti-polio campaign were discussed including the alignment of the provincial EOC with the national EOC while clearly defining roles and responsibilities , establishing a strategic and sustained approach to community engagement, preparing an outbreak analysis and coherent response strategies, improvement of accountability and decision implementation, strengthening of overall EPI programme, resolving the issue of deficiency of doctors and EPI technicians in EPI centres, increasing the number of EPI centres, increasing the remuneration of front-line polio workers and maximum involvement of political and religious leaders in polio programmes were some of the important suggestions.

The chief secretary stressed the need for effective and close coordination amongst the divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, all line departments and the international partner organizations.
