Faisalabad varsity celebrates World Day for Decent Work
Speaker says women should be part of policy making
FAISALABAD:
The Department of Rural Sociology at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) celebrated World Day for Decent Work.
The theme for this year was “Investing in Care for Gender Equality and it called on governments across the globe to generate economic growth, tackle growing demographic challenges and overcome gender discrimination by supporting women’s participation in the economy. Male and female students from the department also took part in the event.
The department was also decked out with different placards to mark the day. The messages on the cards grabbed the attention of students visiting from other departments.
A ceremony was organised at the department supervised by Department of Rural Sociology Chairperson Dr Saira Akhtar. Guest speakers Dr Mubashir Mehdi and Dr Farooq Tanveer also participated in the ceremony.
During the event, the message of the International Centre for Development and Decent Work Director Christoph Scherrer was also read aloud. In his message, Scherrer stated, “Decent work day reminds us of the significant decent work deficits for so many working people around the world whose labour does not lead to sustainable levels of income and livelihood”.
Akhtar stated that many corridors of development are being opened in the era of tis government. Authorities should consider and give importance to gender equality and women should be addressed equally in policy making, she stated.
She maintained that women should be given equal opportunities in every sphere of life. She added that equal representation of women makes them contributing citizens of society.
Mehdi stated that the stronger the economy, the greater the opportunities for business. He stated that students are the future of the nation and a proper working environment can lead to the country’s prosperity.
