Murray in tears after Davis Cup win
Spain create history, oust US to enter semi-final.
GLASGOW:
Andy Murray broke down in tears after leading Great Britain past Luxembourg 4-1 in the Davis Cup, overcome by making a rare competitive appearance in his native Scotland.
Murray wept after his 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Gilles Muller earned Britain a Europe/Africa Group II play-off against Hungary later this year.
“It was one of those things, I wasn’t expecting that to happen,” said a tearful Murray. “Davis Cup is just different to all the other tournaments and that showed.”
Ferrer beats Fish as Spain enters semis
Spain’s David Ferrer beat Mardy Fish 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 as Spain defeated the US to earn a berth in the Davis Cup semi-finals.
Ferrer celebrated by falling backwards on to the court when Fish’s final shot sailed wide. He then leaped into the arms of Spanish team captain Albert Costa. The win gave Spain an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the Davis Cup quarter-final.
“This is a historic victory for us because we have never won before in the US,” said Costa. Spain now host France in the last-four match on September 16.
