ISLAMABAD:
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was informed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials that they had filed four references against Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) for using substandard material. They said that they had recovered Rs6 million under the plea bargain.

The PAC sub-committee meeting was convened by Senator Shibli Faraz on Monday in which audit paras of the energy ministry were reviewed.

The audit officials said that the usage of sub-standard material by IESCO caused a loss of Rs52 million. The officials added that 56 cases pertaining to the matter were sent to NAB in 2006. NAB returned 40 cases worth Rs27 million to related authorities as each case was less than Rs1 million in worth.

The committee member Munza Hassan expressed displeasure and declared the recovery a drop in the ocean.

He added, “If somebody stole Rs10 million and returned Rs2.5 million from it. Was it right to just let him take the rest of the money.” He said that plea bargain was paving way for corruption.
