UK to hand over 26 documents in Imran Farooq case
Dr Farooq’s statement dated June 2, 2008 is also part of the evidence
ISLAMABAD:
Britain will provide 26 documents to Pakistani authorities as evidence in the murder case of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq, including his death certificate, postmortem report and statements of witnesses.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was informed that the United Kingdom Central Authority (UKCA) had agreed to provide the documents and other evidence sought by the Pakistani authorities. They include photographs, forensic report, statements of fingerprint experts and statements of key witnesses.
In addition, Dr Farooq’s statement dated June 2, 2008 is also part of the evidence.
UK agrees to share evidence in Imran Farooq murder case
Three suspects in the case are in jail on judicial remand. The British government has agreed to provide the documents on the condition that the suspects would not be handed down the death penalty. The evidence will be presented before an anti-terrorism court.
During a hearing in the IHC, Additional Attorney General Sajid Illyas Bhatti presented a letter from the UKCA and informed the court that Britain had agreed to provide evidence against accused Khalid Shamim, Mohsin Ali and Moazzam Ali.
Dr Imran Farooq, a senior leader of the MQM, was murdered on September 16, 2010, while returning to his home in London. According to the Metropolitan Police he had suffered multiple stab wounds and head injuries.
The three suspects are being tried in Pakistan for the murder. Khalid and Mohsin had recorded their confessional statements about killing Farooq but later they backtracked on their statement. Moazzam Ali has not yet recorded his statement in the case.
