ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday restored Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera as the federal tax ombudsman.

Sukhera, former IG Punjab, had filed a petition in the high court praying for the restoration of his position. The petition was heard by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah.

Earlier this year on June 13, the Ministry of Law and Justice had dismissed Sukhera's appointment and declared him 'incompetent', subsequent to which Sukhera had filed a petition to the IHC challenging his removal as the FTO.

IHC extends stay order on Sukhera’s removal till Aug 8

In July, IHC had maintained a stay order, allowing Sukhera to remain on his post until the hearing on August 8.

Sukhera had held the tax ombudsman position since 2017. Prior to this position, he was the former Punjab inspector general police (IGP).

He retired as IGP in April 2017 after serving in the Punjab Police for three decades. In the same year after retirement, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s government appointed him as the federal tax ombudsman.
