RAWALPINDI: Like other religious occasions, month of Muharram comes with significance along with an increased demand of essential kitchen items due to tradition of distribution of food like haleem, biryani and qourma, besides kheer at the end of Majlis.

Following this, the markets in Rawalpindi are experiencing an arbitrary increase in prices of kitchen items.

A large number of people distribute haleem, biryani and juices among the poor as well as their relatives and neighbours.

Besides, many people arrange Nazr and Niaz by distributing biryani and qorma with sheermal, taftan or roti. The price magistrates have turned a blind eye from the situation and retailers and vendors have been given a free hand to fleece people.

According to reports, the price of live chicken has increased up to Rs185 per kilogramme (kg) against Rs150 few weeks ago. Rates of vegetables such as onions, tomatoes and peas have been hiked up to Rs80, Rs60 and Rs160 per kg respectively.
