FAISALABAD: In the past six months, 293 women have taken refuge at Darul Aman. Reportedly, the women were fleeing from abusive marriages after divorcing their husbands and were looking for interim lodging before remarrying.

Sources at the shelter shared that around 70% of the women coming to the shelter home had divorced their husbands and were instead looking for temporary lodging before remarrying of their own free will. Many of them had been married forcibly the first time around by their parents.

Sources added that the remaining women seeking shelter at the facility were doing so because their husbands were abusive.

Darul Aman Superintendent Sofia Rizwan stated that the number of women seeking refuge at the shelter before remarrying has increased in recent months. In order to avoid this, she urged parents to refrain from forcing their daughters to marry the men of their choosing and without their daughter’s consent.
