ISLAMABAD:

National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom-munication, while expressing concern over non-recovery of dues from telecom companies, has called for seizing accounts of defaulters in a bid to set a precedent for the future.

The committee, which met under the chairmanship of Barjees Tahir on Thursday, criticised the defaulting telecom companies, saying they were taking people’s wealth abroad. The committee pressed the IT ministry to take immediate steps for the recovery of dues and suspend licences of Long Distance and International (LDI) service operators.

Earlier, briefing the committee, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Dr Muhammad Yaseen said LDI operators had challenged the payment of access promotion contribution in the high court, but the court gave the decision in favour of PTA. Later, the operators took the matter in Supreme Court, which is now sub judice.
