ISLAMABAD:
National Tourism Coordination Board (NTCB) Chairman Syed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari has urged top consultants and private firms to assist Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) in promoting tourism at the global level.

“The process is under way to finalise a brand name in order to ensure its distinctive feature from other competitors,” he said while addressing a two-day consultative workshop of the NTCB and expert groups on tourism on Tuesday. PTDC would float tenders this week in order to develop the local tourism industry as a customised brand in the world, he announced.

“I invite Pakistan’s top private companies to come forward and help us in giving Pakistan’s tourism a brand name, which it deserves,” he said while citing examples of various countries’ tourism brands including “Visit Dubai”. He appealed to the private sector to take the lead in promoting the country’s tourism potential across the globe. “The role of local and international private sectors is imperative for the development of tourism in Pakistan,” he added.

Bukhari told workshop participants that the role of government was to devise business plans and hand them over to the private sector and it was the responsibility of the private sector to carry out development work in the tourism industry. “It is not our job to become a private entity and run hotels,” he remarked. The tourism board chairman said the government had recently formed the NTCB, which comprised leading professionals from the tourism sector.

Speaking on the occasion, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for Pakistan Igancio Artaza praised the government for being cognisant of the huge potential of tourism industry.
