PCB keeping budget details secret
‘Corrupt elements’ force board to hide its strong financial position.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not disclosed its budget for the fiscal year 2011-12 in a bid to keep its financial health hidden from ‘corrupt elements’ present in the country, according to a governing board member.
Last month the PCB approved a deficit budget, insisting that its finances were hit by lack of international cricket.
On the contrary, this year’s budget is far from being in deficit after the board earned a huge monetary compensation of $10.5 million following Pakistan losing the rights of co-hosting the 2011 World Cup.
The PCB decided to keep its budget details secret after it found that certain elements were eyeing the board’s bulging coffers and trying to get involved in running its affairs. A case in point was the attempt by the sports ministry to take control of the cricket administration.
The PCB governing board member revealed that the board had to keep its budget details hidden to protect itself from ‘corrupt elements’.
“There were many people who wanted to take over the PCB chairmanship because of the board’s financial position,” the member told The Express Tribune. “The PCB never got funds from the government and operated independently. With corruption rampant, the PCB decided not to disclose its total budget estimates.
“That’s why the exact budget amount wasn’t revealed and the excuse given was that it’ll take time to incorporate various recommendations in the proposed budget after which the exact figures will be released.”
