Hiring Retired Judges: Court adjourns plea for two weeks

the appointment of the two retired judges was in violation of Supreme Court judgements

LAHORE:
The Lahore High Court on Tuesday again issued notices to the Punjab government and the services secretary to reply to a petition challenging the appointment of Justice (retired) Jahangir Arshad as chairman of the Punjab Services Tribunal and Justice (retired) Afzal Hameed Cheema as chairman of the Labour Appellate Tribunal. The court adjourned for two weeks on Tuesday after a law officer sought more time to get the government’s reply. The petitioner, a lawyer, says the appointment of the two retired judges was in violation of Supreme Court judgements and the national judicial policy, which did not allow the reappointment of a retired judge or other government servant. He asked the court to set aside the appointments and choose fresh candidates on merit.
