Amnesty issues travel warning for US visitors ‘over rampant gun violence’

The Amnesty International has issued a travel warning for visitors to the United States amid rampant gun violence across the country.

The warning comes following the back-to back mass shootings in Ohio and Texas last week that had killed at least 31 people and injured dozens others.

“Today we issue a travel warning calling for travellers and visitors to the United States to exercise extreme caution and have a contingency plan when travelling throughout the country. This is due to ongoing rampant gun violence in the United States,” said the prominent human rights body in a statement issued on Thursday.

"Avoid places where large numbers of people gather, especially cultural events, places of worship, schools and shopping malls," said the group which advocates for tighter gun violence measures in the US.

The communique also added: "Exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, night clubs and casinos."

Moreover, President Donald Trump proposed broader background checks and ensure mentally ill people do not gain access to guns. But he has rejected calls for bans on assault rifles.
