PTI lawmaker asks for donations to support ‘Clean Karachi’ campaign

A day after announcing the ‘Clean Karachi’ campaign, Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi asked for donations to support the #LetsCleanKHI initiative.

Zaidi has claimed that over Rs1.75 billion is required over a period of 90 days to execute the first phase of the cleanliness drive.

Just for everyone’s info, Phase 1 needs over Rs. 175+C over 90 days!

This phase includes cleaning of 5 major & 6 feeder ‘Nalas’ while simultaneously picking up trash from across the city.

The minister also tweeted the bank account details and has asked the ‘Friends of #LetsCleanKHI’ to deposit their donations directly.

Zaidi thanked the media for playing its role and said: “The media has played a superb role so far and the city of Karachi owes you all big time for helping us build the momentum”.

Briefing the media on the initiative, he said that Karachi has a total of 38 nullahs, including 13 major, and all directly flow into the sea and encroachment on them would be removed if needed during the ‘Clean Karachi’ initiative.

The PTI leader further asked the Sindh government to immediately impose a ban on the use of plastic bags across the province.

Zaidi confirmed that he was in the city on the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan. “We are here for the support,” he said, adding that the initiative aimed to clean the city before the rains hit Karachi again.

The federal minister appealed to the occupants living on nullahs to voluntarily vacate the space, pledging that the government will provide them houses in the Pakistan Scheme residential project.

Zaidi also said that the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) will manage the ‘Clean Karachi’ campaign voluntarily.

First phase of 'Clean Karachi Campaign' begins

“The FWO has the capacity to complete it [drive],” the minister said. The FWO has machinery and experience, therefore, it has been decided to utilize it for the drive.

The PTI claims it has around 5,000 volunteers who will take part in the drive. It says that various organizations and individuals have approached them to include them in the ‘Clean Karachi’ drive as everyone wants to see the port city clean and beautiful.

The business community held a meeting with the federal minister on Saturday and confirmed to provide the required funding for the drive. The meeting was attended by various businessmen, including Siraj Kassam Teli and Junaid Makada.
