Trailer for '13 Reasons Why' season 3 reveals a major plot shift
After much controversy, the story line will also reportedly feature no suicide
KARACHI:
The trailer for 13 Reasons Why season 3 has been released on Netflix and it gives away major character deaths. So beware!
The show appears to be embracing a less dark outlook with a plot-line that pivots away from the previous issue of suicide towards a murder mystery. This is perhaps due to the intense scrutiny Netflix has been under ever since the controversial show premiered in 2017. The producers even had to remove a graphic suicide scene from the first season after facing two years of major backlash.
The trailer starts from eight months after the end of season 2. Preventing Tyler from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach find ways to shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move towards recovery.
The trailer opens with a police officer investigating an apparent crime scene. "Here's the thing about the kids at Liberty High, they are connected by their secrets," says the narrator. It is important to note that the voice narrating the trailer is a new character and is not previous narrators Clay, played by Dylan Minnette, or Hannah, who was portrayed by Katherine Langford.
In a dream-like scene, the students of Liberty High are fighting and then someone strangles them. We see a female student vigorously cleaning what appears to be blood in the school bathroom sink and hear, “In the right circumstances, with the right motivation, anyone could have done this."
We now see Clay looking shocked, traumatised or guilty at a funeral. We can't forget that the character is facing the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game after the disappearance of a football player. It's clear that Clay is now himself under police scrutiny and it’s up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone’s deepest secrets.
Trailer review: IT Chapter 2 trailer is not for the faint-hearted
The stakes are raised in this riveting third season of 13 Reasons Why, as the consequences of even the most well-intended actions can alter a life forever.
How it all started
13 Reasons Why is a melodrama about a young girl who takes her own life. The title is derived from the 13 tapes she leaves, each addressed to a different person in her life, detailing the reasons why she committed suicide. Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher and created by Tony-winning playwright Brian Yorkey, the series has received criticism for romanticising suicide.
Netflix will release the third season of “13 Reasons Why” on August 23. Check out the (SPOILER-filled) trailer below.
