Forest dept sets multiple targets for plantation

Monsoon planting campaign continues across province, dept aims to prepare 15m plants in nurseries

LAHORE: The Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries department has decided to plant nine million new saplings across the province during the monsoon season.

The monsoon plantation campaign will continue in several districts and the department aims to prepare a total of 15 million plants in nurseries.

A Plant for Pakistan campaign day will be observed on August 1 when 224,200 saplings will be planted across the province.

Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Department Deputy Director Mohammad Salim Malik said that the plantation campaign has kicked off during the monsoon season.

“This time, the target is to plant nine million new saplings.”

He added that the success ratio of the Bahria plantation campaign was 128% after 150 million trees were planted instead of 120 million.

He maintained that there are around 240 nurseries in different districts, including the provincial capital, where 15 million plants have been prepared.

He said that for the August 1 plantation, school students, college students, members of non-governmental organisations and citizens from every corner of life will participate in planting saplings in their respective areas.

“Saplings will be planted in various parks including Jallo Park, Karol Jungle and Changa Manga Forest and their surrounding areas. Similarly, over 343,000 saplings will be planted on August 8 and 9 under the campaign name of Plant for Punjab.”

The forest department will also provide 0.3 million plants to the Pakistan Army as part of Sarsabz-o-Shadab Pakistan programme. An official of the department told The Express Tribune that citizens can get plants at an affordable price from nurseries of the forest department.

“The target of planting 940,000 saplings has been set during the recent monsoon plantation campaign in the North Zone.

Another target of planting 200,000 samplings in the government forest of Rawalpindi North Zone has been set, while 80,000 saplings will be planted through other departments.”

He added that 160,000 saplings have been allocated for the defense department. “All steps have been completed to make the monsoon plantation campaign successfully by September 15,” he stated.
