KARACHI:
Another water crisis looms over Karachi as supply to the city from six hydrants remains suspended. District Central is already in the grips of a severe water crisis and many fear acute water shortage in the metropolis if the supply of water is not restored.

The crisis was triggered after a tanker driver, Naeem, was injured by a bullet during a protest at Sakhi Hassan hydrant on Tuesday evening. Protesting over the incident, water tanker drivers staged a demonstration on the site of the hydrant and stopped water supply in the city. They demanded that a case be registered against those responsible for firing at Naeem and claimed that Taimuria police had refused to register the case.

On Tuesday, residents of Azizabad, led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MNA Aslam Khan, had staged a protest at Sakhi Hassan hydrant. During the protest, Naeem was hit by a bullet and was shifted to a private hospital. Following this, an application, requesting to register a case against those involved in stoning the protesters , was submitted by Aslam Khan and others, at Taimuria police station.

However, when contacted at around 1am on Wednesday, Shamdan Town DSP Khwaja Moinuddin said that a case hadn’t been registered till then.

Water supply from Sakhi Hassan hydrant was suspended on Tuesday evening and hadn’t been restored till Wednesday.

Apart from Sakhi Hassan hydrant, water supply from five other government-run hydrants also remained suspended, in protest of the incident. More than 10,000 water tankers supply water across Karachi from the hydrants daily. It is feared that prolonged suspension of water supply from these hydrants will result in a severe water crisis in the city.
