Can you imagine Irrfan Khan as the fun-loving, desi Robin Hood that Salman Khan plays in the Dabangg films? Or Randeep Hooda saying something like “Swaagat nahi karoge humara [Won’t you welcome me]?”

Bear with us, we’re trying to make a point here. Producer Arbaaz Khan recently revealed that his brother Salman was not the first choice for the role of Chulbul Pandey inn the Dabangg franchise. In fact, when the first film was being made back in 2010, director Abhinav Kashyap had wanted to cast either Irrfan or Randeep, reported The Hindustan Times.

Speaking to Mumbai Mirror in an interview, Arbaaz said, “When Abhinav narrated the script to me, I asked him why he wasn’t offering me the role of the Robin Hood cop. But more than Chulbul, he saw me as Makkhi, which was an extension of my role in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na.”

He continued, “Abhinav was also looking to cast Randeep Hooda or Irrfan Khan as the lead then but neither of them had been finalised. I offered to produce the film for him and asked him what if we got Salman on board as Pandey jee. He was instantly excited and things quickly fell in place.”

The shooting for Dabangg 3 is currently under way in Phaltan. According to Arbaaz, he and the team are about 60% through and will wrap up the filming by September this year, giving them three months for post-production work. The upcoming film will be a prequel, telling Chulbul’s story and how he transformed from a local goon to the tough-guy cop we all love. It is slated to release in December 2019.
