RAWALPINDI: In a bid to control the spread of deadly and contagious diseases, the Punjab government has decided to launch a crackdown against beauty salon owners by inspecting the equipment they use.

The action is expected to start from next month and all hair and beauty salons across the province have been issued notices. Service providers have been directed to register themselves with the health department and obtain their licences by July 31.

Anyone operating without a licence after the deadline would face action wherein they could face fines and their establishments could even be sealed.

Meanwhile, authorities will also inspect any metallic equipment being used to ensure that the salons were using separate instruments for every customer or are properly sterilizing their equipment. Punjab health department officials say that reuse of such equipment is a major source for the transfer of deadly diseases such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Hepatitis B or C.
